The United States has launched an investigation into a deadly strike that hit a wedding gathering in southern Iran, after an analysis by weapons experts suggested the explosion was likely caused by a direct hit from a US munition.
US Vice President JD Vance confirmed that Washington was examining the incident, saying authorities wanted to determine what happened. The United States has not accepted responsibility for the strike.
The explosion occurred on Tuesday in Kuhestak, Sirik County, along Iran’s southern coast near the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian officials said the strike hit a home during a wedding ceremony, with Iranian state television later reporting that the death toll had risen to five after a 22-year-old woman died from her injuries. Nearly 70 people were reported wounded.
A Reuters analysis of verified images and videos from the scene, reviewed by military weapons experts, indicated that the damage was consistent with a direct strike rather than debris or a ricochet from another target. Several experts said the munition was likely a US weapon, while one suggested it may have missed its intended target.
The US military said it was aware of the reports but maintained that its forces do not target civilians. A US official said investigators were considering several possibilities, including whether the casualties resulted from a US strike, an air defence missile, or another cause.
Funeral ceremonies were held on Thursday for victims of the strike, with mourners gathering outside Kuhestak and paying tribute to those killed. Footage from the ceremony showed mourners throwing flower petals as coffins were carried past lines of soldiers.
The incident occurred amid renewed military tensions between Washington and Tehran. The United States said its latest strikes targeted Iranian military facilities, while Iran responded with missile and drone attacks against US positions in parts of the region.
The investigation into the wedding strike comes as international attention grows over civilian casualties linked to the ongoing US-Iran conflict.
