Fintech company OPay says the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force are investigating a viral false notice claiming that the company is shutting down its operations in Nigeria.
OPay’s Chief Legal Counsel, Akinfolabi Rokosu, disclosed this on Wednesday at a press conference organised by the company, saying OPay was fully cooperating with the investigation and had provided evidence to help identify those behind the fake information.
He said the company would pursue legal action against those responsible for creating and circulating the rumour.
“OPay is taking action against those responsible for creating and circulating this harmful information. We will pursue them and will ensure that the law is fully enforced,” Rokosu said.
He warned that individuals who deliberately spread similar false information should expect legal consequences.
Also speaking, OPay’s Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technical Officer, Dotun Adekunle, dismissed the shutdown claim, assuring customers that the fintech remains fully operational.
“OPay is here, OPay is operating, and OPay is going nowhere,” Adekunle said.
He noted that the viral message had claimed OPay would shut down on September 1, but stressed that the company remained operational on September 2.
Adekunle urged customers to verify information through OPay’s official communication channels before making financial decisions based on social media or messaging-platform posts.
He cautioned that official-looking documents and logos could easily be fabricated and widely circulated.
“A message can look official and still be completely false,” he said, stressing that widespread circulation does not make false information true.
The controversy followed a viral notice circulated on Sunday claiming that OPay would suspend operations from September 1, 2026, and advising customers to withdraw their funds.
OPay had earlier dismissed the notice as false and urged customers to rely only on its verified communication channels for updates.
