The United States military has carried out a fresh wave of strikes against targets in Iran, including an airport in the southern part of the country, as tensions between Washington and Tehran escalate over the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian state media reported that the US military struck Jiroft Airport in Kerman Province, alongside attacks on targets along the coast of the Strait of Hormuz and on Iranian islands in the Gulf.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the strikes targeted facilities linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), following what it described as attempted attacks on commercial vessels in the strategic waterway and threats against American troops stationed in the region.
According to CENTCOM, the targets included air-defence installations, radar equipment, maritime facilities, communications infrastructure and sites associated with Iran’s alleged mine-laying operations.
US President Donald Trump described the operation as “large and powerful,” saying it was launched in response to Iran’s alleged attempt to place sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz and its earlier missile attacks on a US military facility in Jordan.
Trump warned Tehran against retaliating, saying any further Iranian attack would trigger a stronger American response.
He also threatened what he described as an even larger military operation that could leave Iran facing severe destruction.
The latest strikes followed renewed military exchanges over the weekend, when the IRGC claimed that an earlier US attack on Larak Island, near the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz, had killed soldiers and civilians.
Iran subsequently launched ballistic missiles towards the King Hussein and Al-Azraq military bases in Jordan. Jordanian authorities said the missiles were intercepted.
Meanwhile, the Iranian Red Crescent reported civilian casualties following a separate US missile strike in Kuhestak, in the Sirik area.
The organisation said four people, including a child, were killed while more than 50 others sustained injuries after shrapnel struck a residential building where a wedding ceremony was taking place.
A CENTCOM spokesman, responding to questions about possible civilian casualties, said the US military did not deliberately target civilians.
The renewed hostilities mark a significant escalation following a period of relative calm between Washington and Tehran.
The two countries last engaged in a major direct military confrontation in July, after Iran launched a surprise attack on the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, reportedly killing three US service members.
The conflict lasted 13 days before Trump ordered a halt to the strikes to create room for diplomatic efforts and ceasefire negotiations.
Since then, Washington had shifted much of its pressure on Tehran towards economic measures, including sanctions targeting businesses linked to Iran’s cryptocurrency, technology, gold, aviation and shipping sectors.
However, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth had previously declined to rule out renewed military action against Iranian targets in the Strait of Hormuz or elsewhere in the country.
Residents in southern Iranian cities near the strategic waterway reported a series of explosions on Tuesday evening.
Witnesses in Bandar Abbas said several blasts occurred around the Shahid Rajaee port and the city’s airport, with some residents reporting that the explosions caused buildings to shake.
Additional explosions were reported on Qeshm Island and around Sirik, Konarak and Chabahar.
Iran also claimed to have launched ballistic missiles towards Camp Titin, a US military facility in Jordan. Videos circulating online appeared to show missile interceptions over Aqaba, although the reports could not immediately be independently verified.
The latest escalation came shortly after Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian offered to return to a ceasefire if Washington honoured an earlier memorandum of understanding between the two countries.
Speaking at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, Pezeshkian accused Washington of abandoning its commitments less than two weeks after the agreement.
He said Iran would reciprocate immediately if the United States returned to its obligations under the memorandum.
Trump, however, rejected the suggestion of a new agreement with Tehran, saying he was satisfied with Washington’s current position and had little interest in what he described as a worthless deal.
