Troops of Operation ENDURING PEACE (OPEP) have foiled an attempt to transport illicit firearms through Zak Village in Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State, recovering two AK-47 rifles and other items.
The operation was conducted on August 29, 2026, during a stop-and-search exercise along the route.
According to the Nigerian Army, troops intercepted a green Volkswagen Golf vehicle for routine inspection and discovered a specially concealed compartment fabricated within the dashboard.
The driver reportedly abandoned the vehicle and fled into a nearby bush when asked to open the compartment. Troops pursued and apprehended him.
The Army said the suspect attempted to disarm one of the soldiers while being restrained, prompting the troops to respond, resulting in his neutralisation.
A subsequent search of the concealed compartment uncovered two AK-47 rifles, one magazine, two wooden rifle butts, nine magazine pouches, two camel bags, six jungle hats, a mobile phone and an ATM card.
The recovery, according to the Army, highlights the effectiveness of sustained stop-and-search and intelligence-driven operations aimed at disrupting the trafficking and proliferation of illicit firearms.
The Nigerian Army said it would continue to work with other security agencies to secure critical routes and communities while dismantling networks involved in the movement of illegal arms.
It also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements and activities to security agencies.
