Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has criticised the European Union’s technology regulations, saying the bloc’s policies slow down innovation and hinder progress for companies developing new technologies.
Speaking virtually at a technology-focused G20 meeting in North Carolina, Musk called for a more flexible regulatory environment, arguing that emerging technologies should not face excessive restrictions before they are developed.
Musk said the level of regulation in the European Union was extremely high and claimed that such policies delay the introduction of new technologies, although they do not completely prevent innovation.
The SpaceX chief executive also urged leaders outside China to focus on expanding energy production to meet the growing electricity demands of artificial intelligence and data centres. He said access to sufficient power would be a major factor in supporting future technological development.
Musk highlighted the increasing demand for computing infrastructure as companies race to expand artificial intelligence capabilities globally. He noted that China has significant electricity resources but faces restrictions on accessing advanced chips needed for high-end data centres.
The comments came amid a wider global debate over how governments should regulate artificial intelligence while maintaining competitiveness in the technology sector.
The European Union has defended its technology regulations, saying its rules are designed to improve accountability, safety and transparency across digital platforms while ensuring fair competition.
