A majority of Americans oppose President Donald Trump’s recent decision to increase tariffs on Canadian goods and rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America,” according to a new Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll.
The nationwide three-day survey found that only 20 per cent of respondents supported higher tariffs on Canadian imports, while 57 per cent opposed the move and 21 per cent were undecided.
The poll was conducted amid growing tensions between the United States and Canada following the collapse of trade negotiations between the two countries. Canada has been one of the United States’ major trading partners for decades.
The survey also examined reactions to Trump’s order to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America” for official U.S. federal use. The move received limited public support, with 14 per cent of respondents backing the name change, while 63 per cent opposed it.
The renaming order applies only to U.S. federal references and does not determine how Canada, international organisations, or other bodies identify the lake.
The Reuters/Ipsos poll, conducted online among 1,023 U.S. adults, comes ahead of the November 3 midterm elections, with economic concerns and the cost of living remaining key issues for voters.
The findings show continued public concern over the ongoing trade dispute with Canada and the broader impact of the administration’s economic and policy decisions.
