Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes once again proved his importance to the club after delivering a match-winning performance in the Red Devils’ 5-2 Premier League victory over Ipswich Town at Old Trafford.
The Portuguese midfielder scored a hat-trick as Manchester United recovered from an early setback to secure their first league win of the season under manager Michael Carrick.
Ipswich shocked the home crowd by taking the lead in the 29th minute through Leif Davis, who finished a well-worked move after Abdul Fatawu created space down the wing. However, United responded before half-time when Marcelino Nunez’s mistake allowed Matheus Cunha to set up Fernandes for the equaliser.
After the break, United took control of the match. Harry Maguire’s effort was deflected into the Ipswich net by Jacob Greaves for an own goal before Fernandes converted a penalty after Greaves brought down Cunha inside the box.
Fernandes completed his hat-trick in the 68th minute, finishing from close range after efforts from Kobbie Mainoo and Bryan Mbeumo were blocked during a United attack. He later provided the assist for Mbeumo, who scored United’s fifth goal in the 82nd minute.
Ipswich scored a late consolation through Chuba Akpom in stoppage time, but the result marked a strong response from United following their disappointing opening-day defeat to Hull City.
The victory also saw Marcus Rashford return to the starting line-up for Manchester United’s Premier League campaign for the first time since December 2024, while Kobbie Mainoo also featured in Carrick’s starting team.
Despite the emergence of a new era under Carrick, Fernandes continued to demonstrate why he remains one of the club’s most influential figures. His three goals and involvement in another goal highlighted his leadership role as United look to compete strongly this season.
Speaking after the match, Fernandes said the victory was important for the team and supporters after the disappointment of their opening defeat.
United’s attention now turns to building consistency, with Carrick’s side aiming to combine their attacking strength with improvements in defensive organisation.
