The death toll from devastating floods near Nepal’s border with China has risen to 734, while 2,498 people remain missing, according to the country’s disaster management authority.
The latest figures were released on Sunday as rescue operations entered their fifth day following Wednesday’s catastrophic floods, which swept through communities along the Nepal-China border.
Chinese state media had earlier reported 16 deaths and 546 people missing in Tibet, bringing the combined death toll in Nepal and Tibet to 750, with 3,044 people still unaccounted for.
Nepal’s latest number of missing persons represents an increase from the 2,426 recorded in the previous update issued on Saturday evening.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority said the missing persons included 589 foreigners, up from the 517 previously reported as unaccounted for.
The list also includes 933 workers employed on hydropower projects along the river through which the floodwaters swept.
Despite the scale of the disaster, rescue teams have continued efforts to locate missing persons and evacuate those trapped in affected communities.
The disaster authority said a total of 8,186 people had so far been rescued, including 227 foreign nationals.
Meanwhile, authorities in neighbouring India said they had recovered seven bodies from rivers flowing from Nepal. The bodies are believed to be linked to the flood disaster but have not been included in Nepal’s official death toll.
