A federal judge has again rejected President Donald Trump’s attempt to move his New York state criminal hush money case to federal court, a decision that leaves his conviction in place.
U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein ruled on Friday that the grounds cited by Trump in support of the transfer were “neither new nor legally sufficient.”
Trump had sought to move the case from New York state court to federal court, a move that could have created a pathway for his legal team to challenge or potentially seek to reverse his conviction.
The latest ruling represents another setback for the president’s effort to change the venue of the criminal case.
Trump was convicted in New York on charges arising from payments made to adult-film actress Stormy Daniels before the 2016 presidential election. His legal team has continued to challenge the case and the conviction through the courts.
Judge Hellerstein’s ruling means Trump’s latest effort to transfer the case to federal jurisdiction has been unsuccessful.
