GUNMEN KILL APC CHAIRMAN IN KOGI, ABDUCT ANOTHER ALONG ITOBE–OCHADAMU ROAD

Gunmen have killed the All Progressives Congress (APC) chairman of Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, Hon. Ishaq Onu Yunusa, during an attack along the Itobe–Ochadamu Expressway.

Yunusa was attacked on Thursday, August 27, 2026, around Ojuwo Olijo in Ofu Local Government Area of the state.

The Kogi State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Friday.

According to the command’s spokesperson, ASP Afusat Saliu, the attack occurred at about 5:00 p.m. when gunmen reportedly emerged from a nearby bush and opened fire on motorists.

Following the attack, police discovered a blue Toyota Corolla with registration number GWA 636 CH abandoned along the highway.

The driver, identified as Ishaq Yunusa, was found dead inside the vehicle, while another occupant was reportedly abducted and taken into the bush by the attackers.

The police command said it had mobilised personnel in collaboration with other security agencies to search the surrounding forests and rescue the abducted victim, while efforts were also underway to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.

Yunusa’s remains were evacuated to Grimard Hospital, Anyigba, for autopsy as investigators continued to pursue leads connected to the attack.

The Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, PSC, mni, directed sustained security operations along the affected corridor.

The command said the operations were aimed at restoring security in the area, rescuing the abducted victim and ensuring that those responsible for the attack are brought to justice.
