The Police Service Commission has commended the Nigeria Police Force for what it described as professional, orderly and courteous conduct during the Osun State governorship election held on Saturday, August 15, 2026.
The commission assessed in its interim report after monitoring police conduct across the three senatorial districts of Osun State.
The report, based on field observations from polling units across all 30 local government areas, assessed police deployment, professionalism, compliance with election-duty guidelines, inter-agency collaboration and the general conduct of officers.
According to the PSC, police deployment across the state was adequate and strategic, with an average of four officers per polling unit.
It said an average of three officers was deployed to polling units in Osun Central, while Osun East and Osun West had an average of five officers per polling unit.
The commission also noted effective collaboration between the police and other security and safety agencies deployed for the election.
Personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Department of State Services, Nigeria Immigration Service, Federal Road Safety Corps, Federal Fire Service, Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, Nigerian Correctional Service, Nigerian Army, Nigerian Air Force, Nigerian Navy and Defence Intelligence Agency were observed complementing police operations at polling units and the Election Joint Operations Control Room.
The PSC said the inter-agency collaboration was cordial and contributed significantly to the peaceful conduct of the election.
The leader of the commission’s monitoring team, DIG (Dr) Taiwo Lakanu (retd.), expressed satisfaction with the conduct of police personnel during the exercise.
He commended the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, for what he described as an effective deployment strategy.
The commission also acknowledged the roles of DIG Isyaku Mohammed, the Election DIG; CP Samuel Erale Etaifo, the Election CP; and other senior officers involved in the election security operation.
On professionalism and courtesy, the PSC said police officers across the three senatorial districts were generally courteous, approachable and professional.
It added that officers maintained orderliness and responded appropriately to inquiries from monitoring teams.
“Overall, the Nigeria Police Force exhibited a high level of professionalism, orderliness and cordiality during the election,” the commission stated.
The PSC said it would continue to exercise its oversight responsibilities to ensure that police conduct during elections remained consistent with established professional standards.
