Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 8 Division Garrison have repelled a bandit attack and prevented the rustling of livestock in Asarara village, Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
A security source disclosed the development to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday, saying the operation successfully thwarted an attempt by armed bandits to abduct residents and steal livestock from the community.
According to the source, the incident occurred on Wednesday when the attackers invaded the village.
The troops reportedly engaged the bandits in a gun battle, forcing them to retreat after sustaining resistance from the military.
“The troops responded swiftly and engaged the bandits in a fierce exchange of gunfire, compelling them to flee. Some of the attackers are believed to have escaped with gunshot wounds,” the source said.
The prompt military intervention, the source added, prevented what could have resulted in significant casualties and the loss of property.
The source, who requested anonymity because he was not authorised to speak publicly on the matter, said the fleeing bandits were chased towards the Gwangi riverside community.
He also commended residents for providing timely intelligence, noting that community cooperation played a key role in the success of the operation.
According to him, security agencies have intensified proactive measures to safeguard lives and property across vulnerable communities in the area.
He praised the professionalism and courage displayed by the troops, describing their swift response as instrumental in averting a potentially tragic incident.
The source further urged residents, particularly those in farming communities, to remain vigilant and continue sharing credible information with security agencies to strengthen ongoing efforts against criminal activities in the state.
