Senior Pastor Sarah Omakwu has sparked debate after describing marriages between younger men and older women as a “red flag,” saying she believes such unions raise concerns about maturity and compatibility.

The cleric made the remarks during a church service, where she questioned why some younger men choose to marry older women instead of their peers.

According to her, many younger men who dismiss women of their own age as immature may themselves lack maturity.

“I’m seeing young men these days marrying women that are older than them. That is a red flag,” she said.

Pastor Omakwu argued that while marriages involving older women and younger men may have worked in previous generations, changing societal attitudes have altered the dynamics of such relationships.

She noted that many contemporary women are more outspoken and less willing to tolerate certain behaviours, making such marriages potentially more challenging.

Questioning the rationale behind such unions, she said, “You say your age mates are too childish. You too, you are childish. How did you finish with the senior person?”

The pastor also challenged the expectation that an older wife should automatically submit to or accord traditional respect to a younger husband solely because of marriage.

“Is it not even uncalled for somebody older than you to be respecting you?” she asked.

While acknowledging that her views might not be universally accepted, Omakwu maintained that they reflected her personal opinion.

“Anyway, it’s my opinion. Do whatever you want with it,” she concluded.

Her remarks have since generated reactions on social media, with opinions divided over age differences in marriage and the factors that contribute to successful relationships.
