An early morning fire has destroyed several makeshift residential structures and valuables at Abudu Street, Abule Oja, along UNILAG Road in Yaba, Lagos State

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, said no life was lost in the incident, which was brought under control by a joint team of emergency responders on Wednesday.

LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the fire spread rapidly because of the close arrangement of the structures and the combustible materials used in their construction.

He said responders prevented the flames from spreading to nearby buildings and also protected an adjoining two-storey building.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, while investigations are ongoing.

LASEMA said damage assessment has begun and government agencies have been mobilised to provide relief to affected residents.

Residents were also urged to observe fire safety measures, including avoiding faulty electrical installations, overloading sockets and ensuring that fire extinguishers and smoke detectors are available in homes and businesses.
