Arsenal has reached an agreement with Newcastle United to sign Brazilian midfielder and club captain Bruno Guimaraes for £75 million, with the 28-year-old expected to undergo a medical ahead of completing the transfer.
According to Sky Sports, negotiations between the two Premier League clubs have resulted in an agreement after Newcastle initially rejected Arsenal’s opening proposal.
Guimaraes is now set to leave St James’ Park after three-and-a-half years at the club, having joined Newcastle from French side Lyon in 2022 for a reported £40 million.
The Brazil international had reportedly made it known earlier in the summer that he wanted to move to Arsenal if Newcastle received an offer that met their valuation.
Since arriving on Tyneside, Guimaraes has established himself as a key figure for Newcastle, making 195 appearances and scoring 31 goals across competitions.
He still had two years remaining on his contract, with Newcastle also retaining an option to extend the agreement by a further year.
Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie said Newcastle had been determined to keep their captain and would not have considered selling him had the midfielder expressed a desire to remain at the club.
“Newcastle were desperate to keep Bruno Guimaraes, and if he had said he wanted to stay, Newcastle would have refused any offer from Arsenal or any other club,” Downie said.
However, Guimaraes reportedly remained determined to secure a move, viewing Arsenal as an opportunity to compete regularly for major trophies.
Downie also said Newcastle were satisfied with the midfielder’s conduct throughout the negotiations, noting that he joined the club’s pre-season training camp in Spain while discussions over his future continued.
“Newcastle feel Guimaraes has complied with their demands immaculately. They did not want a repeat of the Alexander Isak situation,” he said.
The transfer would take Newcastle’s income from player sales this summer beyond £240 million, following the reported departures of Anthony Gordon to Barcelona and Sandro Tonali to Tottenham.
