Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has alleged that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is planning to freeze the bank accounts of the state government ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
The allegation was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, on behalf of the governor.
According to the statement, the Osun State Government received what it described as credible intelligence indicating that the anti-graft agency had concluded plans to freeze all state government accounts.
Governor Adeleke also alleged that the EFCC was targeting the accounts of senior government officials, warning that such a move could disrupt government activities in the days leading up to the governorship poll.
Describing the alleged plan as “the height of lawlessness,” Adeleke argued that freezing the state’s accounts would amount to an attempt to paralyse government operations before residents head to the polls on August 15.
“There is no legal basis or justification for any push to freeze the state government accounts. The anti-graft agency has no legal powers to freeze the account of a state government,” the statement quoted the governor as saying.
The governor maintained that any attempt to carry out the alleged action would constitute an abuse of power and could undermine the smooth running of government business during a critical political period in the state.
Adeleke further described the reported move as a threat to his administration’s ability to function effectively ahead of the governorship election.
As of the time of filing this report, the EFCC had not publicly responded to the allegations.
