The Nigeria Police Force has called for stronger collaboration among security agencies, governments and communities in tackling insecurity in the South-East.
The call was made at the 2026 South-East Regional Security Summit held at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia, Abia State, on Thursday.
The summit, organised by the Federal Ministry of Defence in collaboration with the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (South-East), was themed, “Collaborative Approaches to Strengthening Security and Regional Stability.”
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, was represented at the event by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 9 Police Command Headquarters, Umuahia, Nwonyi Polycarp Emeka.
The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, also represented the AIG in charge of Zone 13 Police Headquarters, Ukpo, Anambra State.
Speaking during a panel session on security challenges in the region, Nwonyi advocated enhanced inter-agency cooperation, intelligence sharing, community-based policing and sustained engagement with relevant stakeholders.
He also called for greater public support for security agencies, saying a coordinated approach was necessary to develop practical and sustainable solutions to insecurity in the region.
The police said the AIG’s participation focused on intelligence-driven strategies and measures aimed at restoring lasting peace and stability across the South-East.
In recognition of his contribution to the summit and his commitment to national security, Nwonyi received an award from the Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, a retired general.
Declaring the summit open, Abia State Governor Alex Otti said the event provided an opportunity for stakeholders to develop coordinated responses to the region’s security challenges.
The summit was attended by the Minister of Defence; Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke; representatives of South-East governors; the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives; heads of security and law enforcement agencies; senior military and police officers; traditional rulers; religious leaders and other stakeholders.
The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to working with sister security agencies, governments at all levels and community stakeholders to strengthen security and promote sustainable peace across the South-East.
