Troops of Operation MESA under the 3 Brigade of the Nigerian Army have repelled an attempted bandits’ attack on Shanono Local Government Area of Kano State, killing 19 of the attackers in a fierce gun battle.

The operation, which took place around 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, followed credible intelligence on the movement of armed bandits around Ungwan Tudu, Ungwan Tsamiya, and Goron Dutse areas of Shanono.

According to security sources, the troops, acting on a tip-off, swiftly mobilised to the area in collaboration with other security agencies. The bandits, who were said to have arrived on motorcycles, engaged the soldiers in a heavy exchange of gunfire.

During the encounter, the troops successfully overpowered the assailants, forcing them to retreat while inflicting heavy casualties. Nineteen of the bandits were reportedly neutralised, and several motorcycles as well as two mobile phones were recovered from the scene.

Unfortunately, two soldiers and one local vigilante member lost their lives in the confrontation.

A military source told reporters that additional troops have since been deployed to the area to forestall any reprisal attack and protect vulnerable communities that have suffered repeated raids and cattle rustling incidents.

Confirming the development, the Commander of the 3 Brigade, Brigadier General Ahmed Tukur, commended the gallantry of the troops and assured residents of the Army’s continued commitment to safeguarding lives and property in Kano State.

He urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movement or activity to security agencies.
