The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has commenced its 2025 Ember Months Campaign in Kebbi State with a call on motorists to adopt responsible driving habits and avoid distractions behind the wheel.

Speaking during a press briefing to officially launch the campaign in Birnin Kebbi on Monday, the Sector Commander, Mrs. Rukayya Zakaria, said the annual exercise was aimed at reducing the rate of road crashes, injuries, and fatalities associated with the high-travel period.

Zakaria noted that the ember months usually witness increased vehicular movement and human activities, leading to more traffic congestion and a higher risk of accidents.

“This year’s theme, ‘Take Responsibility for Your Safety: Stop Distracted Driving,’ reminds all road users that human factors remain the leading cause of most crashes,” she said. “Drivers must take personal responsibility for their actions on the road.”

She identified driver fatigue, overloading, conveying passengers in haulage vehicles, and the transportation of fuel in plastic containers as common causes of accidents.

Zakaria further listed speeding, drunk driving, the use of mobile phones while driving, and failure to use seat belts as frequent violations that contribute to road mishaps.

According to her, this year’s campaign will focus on strict enforcement of traffic laws and sustained public enlightenment. She disclosed that personnel and special marshals would be deployed across major highways and accident-prone corridors to ensure compliance.

“We will also carry out free vehicle checks, hold town hall meetings, and organize rallies in motor parks across the country,” Zakaria stated.

The sector commander added that the FRSC had strengthened collaborations with driving schools, fleet operators, non-governmental organizations, and civil society groups to enhance safe driving culture.

She commended the Kebbi State Government for its consistent support and partnership with the corps, noting that mobile courts and stop-over operations had helped curb offences such as overloading and excessive speeding.

Zakaria, however, appealed to motorists to obey traffic regulations and remain safety-conscious, not just during the ember months but at all times.
