The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of the Founder and General Overseer of Power in the Word of God for the World Ministries, Oron, Pastor Etetim Udo, whose death is being treated as a suspected case of suicide.
The command disclosed that the incident was reported on Thursday, July 23, 2026, after it received a distress call from a resident of the area.
According to a statement issued on Saturday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, the caller informed the police that he had arrived at the church premises, where he usually parks his motorcycle, and noticed an unusual gathering of people.
The resident reportedly told officers that he was subsequently informed by the deceased’s children that their father had allegedly taken his own life.
Following the report, police operatives were immediately deployed to the church located at No. 1B Etim Inyang Street, Oron, to assess the situation and secure the scene.
The police said preliminary observations indicated that the cleric was found suspended inside the church with what appeared to be a twisted mosquito net rope.
Investigators processed the scene in line with standard forensic procedures, took photographs, and recovered relevant exhibits that will assist in determining the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
The body of the deceased was later evacuated to a hospital, where he was confirmed dead by the attending medical doctor. His remains have since been deposited in a mortuary pending the conduct of an autopsy.
While initial findings suggest a suspected case of suicide, the Police Command emphasized that investigations are still ongoing and that no definitive conclusion has been reached. The command said all possible circumstances surrounding the cleric’s death would be thoroughly examined before a final determination is made.
The Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State, CP Baba Azare, assured residents that the investigation would be comprehensive, impartial and professionally handled.
He appealed to members of the public who may have information relevant to the investigation to come forward and cooperate with law enforcement authorities.
The police also cautioned against the circulation of unverified information and urged the public to refrain from speculation that could compromise the investigation or create unnecessary anxiety.
However, the outcome of the police investigation and the findings of the autopsy are expected to provide greater clarity on the circumstances surrounding the death of the cleric.
