The Akwa Ibom State Government has warned residents to comply with environmental sanitation regulations or face arrest and prosecution.
In a public notice, the Commissioner for Information, Hon. Aniekan Umanah, said the warning is in line with the Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency Law and the Public Health Law of Akwa Ibom State.
The Government listed environmental sanitation offences to include indiscriminate dumping of refuse, blocking drains and waterways, littering public places, discharging waste on roads and drains, allowing premises to become overgrown with weeds, and moving about during the monthly environmental sanitation exercise.
The statement stressed that anyone found violating movement restrictions during the sanitation period will be arrested and prosecuted, while landlords, caretakers and occupiers are expected to keep their premises clean and provide standard refuse bins.
The Government added that offenders may face fines, community service and other penalties prescribed by law, and urged residents to support the sanitation programme to ensure a cleaner, healthier and safer Akwa Ibom State.
