The Nigerian Senate has warned that heads of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) as well as Government-Owned Enterprises (GOEs) who fail to honour invitations from its committees will face constitutional and legislative sanctions.
The resolution followed a debate on Thursday after members expressed concern over the repeated refusal of several agencies to appear before the Senate Committee on Finance, chaired by Senator Sani Musa.
Presiding over the session, Senate President Godswill Akpabio led the chamber in adopting resolutions directing all government agencies to comply with legislative invitations.
Leading the debate, Senator Abdul Ningi argued that the National Assembly could no longer continue pleading with government agencies to perform what he described as their constitutional responsibility.
He said persistent refusal by some agencies to appear before legislative committees undermines the authority of the National Assembly, weakens legislative oversight and poses a threat to Nigeria’s democratic system.
The Senate maintained that agencies which fail to comply with future invitations would be sanctioned in line with the Constitution and existing laws.
