Residents of Omoku in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State have been thrown into panic following a deadly attack by suspected gunmen that claimed the lives of four persons, including the Commander of the Organised Security Peace and Advisory Committee (OSPAC) in the community.
The attack, which occurred on Wednesday, also left two other persons with serious injuries. Rismadarvoice reporters gathered that the victims are currently receiving treatment at a hospital.
The slain OSPAC commander was identified simply as Boski, who headed the Omoku Unit of the local security outfit. Three women were also reportedly killed during the attack.
The circumstances surrounding the incident were still unclear as of the time of filing this report, as security agencies and other parastatals were not on the ground to disclose details on the motive behind the attack.
A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the incident sparked widespread fear across the community, with many residents remaining indoors over concerns of further violence.
According to the source, commercial activities were disrupted as usually busy streets became deserted shortly after the attack, while many businesses closed earlier than usual due to heightened tension.
The latest incident has renewed concerns over insecurity in the oil-rich community, with residents calling on security agencies to swiftly apprehend those responsible and restore peace.
Reacting to the development after the incident, the Rivers State Police Command condemned the killings, describing the incident as a setback to the relative peace being enjoyed in the state.
In a statement, the Command said it remained committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice.
“The Rivers State Command is saddened by this incident, which has disturbed the relative peace being enjoyed in the state. The Command condemns this act in its entirety and reiterates that the perpetrators will be brought to justice,” the police said.
The Command appealed to members of the public to provide credible and actionable information that could aid ongoing investigations into the attack.
Police authorities assured residents that every effort would be made to identify, arrest and prosecute those behind the killings, while urging the public to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies.
