Akwa Ibom State Government has disowned a fraudulent online portal claiming to be accepting applications for the 2026 Students Bursary Scheme, warning members of the public, particularly students, against falling victim to the scam.
In a press release issued on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Information, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Umanah, the government said its attention had been drawn to a fake message circulating on social media with the caption, “AKWA IBOM STUDENTS BURSARY 2026 APPLICATION IS ONGOING,” directing applicants to an unauthorised website.
The government stated unequivocally that the message and the portal did not originate from the State Government or any of its Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), describing the website as fraudulent and untrustworthy.
It urged students of Akwa Ibom origin and the general public to disregard the message and refrain from accessing the fake portal or submitting personal information through it.
According to the statement, the only official portal for the Akwa Ibom State Students Bursary Scheme is https://bursary.akwaibomstate.gov.ng, advising applicants to rely solely on the official platform and other verified government communication channels for authentic information.
The government also cautioned members of the public against disclosing personal, financial or academic information on unauthorised websites, warning that it would not be liable for any loss, identity theft, fraud or data breach resulting from engagement with fraudulent platforms.
To curb the activities of those behind the fake portal, the state government said it has directed relevant security agencies to investigate the fraudulent scheme and ensure that those responsible are identified, apprehended and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare and educational advancement of Akwa Ibom students, assuring that the public would be officially informed through its verified channels whenever the 2026 bursary application process commences.
