President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described the Nigerian Army as a formidable force whose legacy of courage, professionalism and sacrifice continues to strengthen peace, security and stability in Nigeria, across Africa and on the global stage.

The President remarked on Monday at the grand finale of the 163rd Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) 2026 held at the Liberation Stadium in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where he was represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

Tinubu said the Nigerian Army remains a critical pillar of the nation’s security architecture and a respected contributor to regional and international peace support operations.

He noted that from its participation in global conflicts to leadership in regional interventions and United Nations peacekeeping missions, the Army has consistently demonstrated resilience, discipline and operational excellence, helping to safeguard Nigeria’s sovereignty while promoting peace across the continent.

The President reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening the Army through sustained investment in modernisation, troop welfare and the acquisition of advanced military capabilities to address emerging security threats.

He also commended the successful hosting of the African Land Forces Forum, describing it as a strategic platform for enhancing military diplomacy, innovation and cooperation among African armed forces.

Speaking on the theme of NADCEL 2026, “Protecting the Nation and Serving the People: A Way Forward for the Nigerian Army,” Tinubu said it reflects the enduring relationship between the military and the citizens it serves.

He paid tribute to fallen soldiers for their sacrifices in defence of the nation’s unity and assured that the Federal Government would continue to support their families. The President further highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen indigenous defence production, intelligence sharing and the deployment of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, to improve operational effectiveness.

In his remarks, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara commended the Nigerian Army for its contributions to maintaining peace and protecting critical national assets in the Niger Delta, pledging his administration’s continued support for security agencies.

Earlier, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, said the Nigerian Army remains committed to defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity while adapting to evolving security challenges through professionalism, innovation and strategic partnerships.

He said the Army would sustain its modernisation drive through improved equipment, infrastructure development and the induction of advanced operational platforms, stressing that addressing contemporary security challenges requires collaboration among the military, government, international partners and citizens.

The NADCEL 2026 grand finale featured a military parade, tactical demonstrations, equipment display, presentation of the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Awards and a research and development exhibition showcasing indigenous military innovations.
