At least 14 people have been killed following a fresh wave of Russian missile and drone attacks on Kyiv and surrounding areas, Ukrainian authorities said, a day before NATO leaders gather for a crucial summit in Ankara, Turkey.
The overnight assault targeted residential buildings in the Ukrainian capital for the second time in a week, leaving about 60 others injured and causing extensive damage to homes and infrastructure.
According to President Volodymyr Zelensky, Russia launched 68 missiles and 351 attack drones during the barrage. While Ukrainian air defence systems intercepted many of the drones and cruise missiles, ballistic missiles penetrated the country’s defences due to a shortage of interceptor missiles.

Zelensky called on NATO allies, particularly the United States and European partners, to approve stronger measures to reinforce Ukraine’s air defence capabilities during the summit.
“It is critically important that the NATO summit produces strong decisions to strengthen our air defence and protect the lives of ordinary Ukrainians,” the Ukrainian president said.
The strikes left a multi-storey apartment building severely damaged after a missile tore through its upper floors, while authorities in the Kyiv suburb of Vyshneve ordered evacuations over fears of unexploded ordnance in the area.
Residents described hearing multiple explosions throughout the night as air raid sirens sounded across the capital.
Russia’s Ministry of Defence confirmed carrying out what it described as a “massive strike,” claiming the attacks targeted military-industrial facilities as well as fuel and energy infrastructure in several Ukrainian regions.

Ukrainian officials, however, said about 30 residential buildings were damaged, with emergency workers continuing search-and-rescue operations beneath the rubble.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen condemned the attack, stressing that Ukraine urgently requires additional air defence systems, a matter expected to feature prominently during the NATO summit.
Meanwhile, Russia claimed its air defence forces intercepted more than 500 Ukrainian drones overnight, while Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said several drones targeting the Russian capital had been destroyed.
