The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has identified operational effectiveness, manpower development, personnel welfare and sound administration as the key pillars driving the Nigerian Army’s transformation into a professional and combat-ready force.
The Army Chief stated this during an interactive session with media executives in Port Harcourt as part of activities marking the 163rd Nigerian Army Day Celebration, NADCEL 2026.

Lieutenant General Shaibu said the Nigerian Army remains committed to adapting to the country’s evolving security challenges through sustained investment in operational capability, human capital development, troop welfare and institutional reforms.
He attributed recent operational successes to the support of President Bola Tinubu, noting that the acquisition of modern combat equipment, including Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles, Armoured Personnel Carriers, surveillance drones and the expansion of Army Aviation, has significantly enhanced the military’s operational capacity.
The Chief of Army Staff also disclosed that the Army has expanded its manpower development programme by establishing two additional training depots in Osun and Ebonyi States, complementing the existing depot in Zaria to strengthen training for recruits.
On personnel welfare, he highlighted ongoing initiatives including the construction of new accommodation, improved medical services, subsidised education through Nigerian Army Command Schools and the implementation of the Group Life Assurance Scheme, which he said has benefited about 15,000 personnel.

Lieutenant General Shaibu further stressed the importance of prudent resource management, transparency and increased patronage of indigenous defence industries in strengthening the Army’s logistics and operational efficiency.
He commended the media for its professionalism and responsible reporting, urging journalists and Nigerians to continue supporting the Armed Forces by disseminating accurate information and through collective efforts to enhance national security.
