President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to religious freedom, stressing that the country remains a democracy governed by constitutional guarantees that protect the rights of citizens of all faiths.
Reacting to recent claims by the United States regarding alleged religious intolerance in Nigeria, President Tinubu, in a statement shared on his official social media page, said such characterisation does not reflect the nation’s reality.
He noted that since 2023, his administration has maintained open and active engagement with both Christian and Muslim leaders while addressing security challenges affecting citizens across all regions and religions.
According to the President, “Nigeria stands firmly as a democracy governed by constitutional guarantees of religious liberty. The characterisation of Nigeria as religiously intolerant does not reflect our national reality.”
Tinubu added that religious tolerance remains a core part of Nigeria’s identity and governance, affirming that the country “opposes religious persecution and does not encourage it.”
He further stated that his administration remains open to working with the United States government and the international community to deepen cooperation and understanding in protecting communities of all faiths.
