Amnesty International Nigeria has condemned an alleged mob attack on a court in Katsina State, warning that the rule of law must prevail over what it described as “jungle justice.”

In a statement issued on Friday, the organisation expressed concern over reports that a crowd besieged a court in Kofar Soro, Katsina, on July 1, demanding the extrajudicial execution of a defendant facing a blasphemy allegation.

Amnesty described the incident as a serious threat to Nigeria’s justice system, insisting that every accused person is entitled to a fair trial regardless of the allegations against them.

The rights group also linked the development to the recent killing of a teacher and mother of five, Ummulkhairi, who was reportedly lynched in Kaduna State over allegations of attempted child abduction, warning that such incidents reflect a growing disregard for due process.

According to Amnesty, the Katsina crowd allegedly included children and young men armed with weapons such as machetes, spears, iron rods, knives and broken bottles.

The organisation described the involvement of children in the incident as particularly disturbing, noting that they should be in school or learning vocational skills rather than participating in mob violence.

Amnesty International called on the Katsina State Government and relevant security agencies to investigate the incident thoroughly and ensure anyone responsible for inciting or participating in the attempted mob action is brought to justice.

The organisation stressed that justice must be pursued through lawful judicial processes, not violence or extrajudicial actions.
