The Nigerian Democratic Congress says it has filed an appeal against a Federal High Court judgment that set aside its registration and insists the party remains legally recognised.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, said that the legal team filed the appeal on Monday at the Court of Appeal in Lokoja, Kogi State.

He said the party would serve the Independent National Electoral Commission with the court papers soon.

The director dismissed reports that the NDC had been deregistered. He said the party is not in panic mode, and that candidates have no reason to fear, since the party remains registered on INEC’s portal.

He also disputed media coverage of the court judgment, saying the case only challenged the party’s logo not its existence as a political party.

The appeal follows several days of emergency strategy meetings involving the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi; his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso; National Leader Seriake Dickson; and other senior party figures. A party official says those meetings ran through the weekend as the legal team prepared its case.

The dispute stems from a Federal High Court ruling in Lokoja that set aside an earlier judgment which had directed INEC to register the NDC. The party calls it a setback, but says it does not amount to deregistration and maintains it remains legally recognised pending the outcome of the appeal.
