Akwa Ibom State Government has reiterated its commitment to improving the welfare and well-being of senior citizens through targeted policies and social support programmes.

The Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Princess Emem Ibanga, gave the assurance on Tuesday while receiving the leadership of the National Council of Nigerian Senior Citizens (NACONSEC) on behalf of Governor Umo Eno at the ministry’s conference room in Uyo.

Princess Ibanga said the Governor Umo Eno-led administration remains committed to initiatives that enhance the quality of life of elderly citizens, citing the establishment of the Senior Citizens Centre, monthly stipends, and enrollment of senior citizens in the State Health Insurance Scheme as key interventions.

She described senior citizens as invaluable assets whose wealth of experience and wisdom continue to contribute to the development of the state, assuring them of sustained government support.

The Commissioner also encouraged the elderly to promote civic participation by mobilising eligible citizens to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), noting that the card serves both electoral and identification purposes.

Earlier, the State Chairman of NACONSEC, Elder Okon Udofia, commended Governor Eno for prioritising the welfare of senior citizens through the payment of pensions and gratuities, provision of free health insurance, and establishment of the Senior Citizens Centre.

Udofia said the initiatives have significantly improved the lives of elderly residents and strengthened their sense of inclusion in governance. He appealed for continued collaboration between the association and government to further advance the interests of senior citizens in the state.
