The Kano State Government has sealed a gas filling station located near a school along Gwarzo Road over safety concerns, as part of an ongoing enforcement exercise targeting illegal structures across the state.
The operation was led by the Director-General of the Kano Geographic Information System (KANGIS), Dr Dalhatu Aliyu Sani, who said the facility posed a significant threat to schoolchildren and residents in the area.
According to Dr Sani, the decision was taken to prevent potential accidents that could endanger lives, especially those of pupils attending the nearby school.

The sealing of the gas station followed a broader enforcement exercise that saw about 15 illegal structures shut down in various parts of Kano, including locations around Sokoto Road, the Yahaya Gusau axis, NNDC Quarters and Rijiyar Zaki.
Dr Sani explained that the affected structures lacked the necessary documentation, including building permits and title documents, required under state regulations.
He further disclosed that some of the structures were illegally erected under high-tension power lines, on waterways and in other restricted areas, describing the development as a violation of urban planning laws and a threat to public safety.
The KANGIS boss said the enforcement campaign, tagged “Operation Show Your Documents,” is aimed at ensuring compliance with government regulations and promoting orderly development across the state.
He noted that property owners with valid documents would have their premises unsealed, stressing that the exercise is not intended to generate revenue or impose penalties but to enforce planning standards.

Dr Sani added that the initiative would support ongoing development projects, including road construction and streetlight installation, as Kano continues to experience rapid population growth driven by migration and commercial activities.
The enforcement team also revisited a previously sealed illegal structure located at Kantin Kwari Market near the Fire Service area as part of its monitoring efforts.
