Media personality, Daddy Freeze has responded to criticism over his decision to wear black attire to the memorial service held in honour of late actor Alex Ekubo, saying his choice was influenced by how he viewed the actor’s untimely passing.
The broadcaster addressed the controversy during an Instagram live session, following reactions from social media users who pointed out that guests had been asked to wear white to the Service of Songs held in Lagos.
Rismadarvoice reports that Daddy Freeze and his wife attracted attention at the event after attending in black outfits, contrary to the dress code stated on the invitation.
Explaining his actions, he admitted that he failed to notice the dress instruction on the invitation and described the incident as an oversight rather than a deliberate disregard for the family’s wishes.
According to him, the section of the invitation containing the dress code was not immediately visible to him, and he attended the event believing it was a solemn occasion that called for traditional mourning attire.
He noted that in his cultural background, black clothing is commonly associated with funerals and periods of mourning, which influenced his decision on what to wear.
Daddy Freeze also reflected on the death of the actor, stating that he found it difficult to view the loss as a celebration of a life fully lived because of Ekubo’s relatively young age. He described the actor’s passing as a tragic loss and said many people were still trying to come to terms with the reality of his death.
While acknowledging beliefs that the deceased may have gone to a better place, he maintained that he felt the actor still had much more to accomplish and that his death came too soon.
Meanwhile, the media personality apologised to anyone offended by his choice of outfit and reiterated that he had no intention of disrespecting the family or disregarding the event’s guidelines.
