Seplat Energy Plc has appointed Effiong Okon as its Chief Executive Officer, marking a new phase in the company’s leadership and growth strategy.

Okon joined Seplat Energy in 2018 as Executive Director, Operations, where he was responsible for the company’s operational performance and led several initiatives aimed at improving efficiency and achieving operational excellence.

In July 2022, he was appointed Director, New Energy, with responsibility for driving growth in the company’s midstream gas business and developing power projects based on gas and renewable energy.

The initiatives were designed to support energy transition efforts by reducing reliance on diesel and petrol-powered electricity generation.

With more than 32 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, Okon began his career in 1992 as a Petroleum Reservoir Engineer with Shell. His professional experience spans Africa, Europe, the United States, the Middle East and Nigeria, covering upstream and integrated oil and gas operations.

Throughout his career, he has worked across various areas of the exploration and production value chain, including petroleum engineering, exploration, project execution, production operations, field development, operational excellence, cost leadership, and full life-cycle management of oil and gas assets.

During his time at Shell, he held several senior leadership positions, including Chief Reservoir Engineer, Deputy Vice President Technical, General Manager Offshore Assets, General Manager Deepwater Production, and Vice President, Cost Leadership and Continuous Improvement.

Okon is an alumnus of the University of Benin, IMD Business School and Harvard Business School.

He is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers and a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers.

His appointment is expected to strengthen Seplat Energy’s focus on operational excellence, gas development, power generation and energy transition initiatives.
