Israeli forces have advanced beyond Lebanon’s Litani River for the first time since 2006 and now appear positioned to tighten encirclement around Nabatieh, one of southern Lebanon’s largest and most strategically significant cities, according to reports from Lebanese military sources and regional media.
Senior Lebanese military officials told Anadolu on Saturday that Israeli troops had crossed the Litani River, which Israel has previously treated as the informal boundary of its expanded military operations in southern Lebanon.

The reported advance places Israeli forces on the outskirts of Nabatieh, a city widely regarded as an economic and cultural centre in the south. Analysts say the city’s capture or further military pressure around it would mark a major shift in the ongoing conflict dynamics.
Al Jazeera reporting from southern Lebanon indicated that Israel has intensified air operations while attempting to encircle Nabatieh and disrupt movement between southern Lebanon and areas further inland.
Lebanon’s military said two soldiers sustained serious injuries after a vehicle came under attack from an Israeli drone near Nabatieh. Separately, Lebanon’s National News Agency reported that an Israeli drone strike killed at least one paramedic and injured four others in Jebchit, while also damaging a local hospital.
Additional Israeli air strikes and artillery fire were reported near Beaufort Castle, a historic site overlooking parts of southern Lebanon that previously remained under Israeli control for nearly two decades before withdrawal in 2000.
Hezbollah later announced retaliatory attacks targeting northern Israel, including rocket fire and drone operations against Israeli military positions. The group also claimed ambushes and strikes against Israeli military assets inside southern Lebanon.
The escalation comes amid ongoing discussions between Lebanese and Israeli officials aimed at securing a longer-term ceasefire, facilitated by the United States. Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam condemned Israel’s actions as a “dangerous and unprecedented” escalation and called for an immediate cessation of hostilities.

Israel has defended its military operations as part of efforts to counter Hezbollah and advance disarmament objectives, while Lebanese authorities continue to warn of worsening humanitarian conditions.
Reports indicate that evacuation orders affecting multiple villages in southern Lebanon have displaced large numbers of residents, with many families struggling to find shelter amid continued fighting.
The conflict has deepened concerns over regional stability as diplomatic efforts continue alongside intensified military activity on the ground.
