The Unity Cup has officially been confirmed as a FIFA Tier 1 event ahead of next week’s tournament at The Valley in south-east London, giving all matches full international recognition under FIFA regulations.
The competition, scheduled to run from May 26 to 30 at Charlton Athletic’s stadium, will feature Nigeria, Jamaica, India and Zimbabwe. Nigeria will take on Zimbabwe in the opening semi-final on May 26, while Jamaica face India on May 27. The third-place match and final are both slated for May 30.
Nigeria entered the tournament as defending champions after defeating Jamaica on penalties following a 2-2 draw in last year’s final, having earlier beaten Ghana 2-1 in the semi-finals.

The FIFA Tier 1 status further boosts the profile of the Unity Cup, which has become a major celebration of football, culture and diaspora communities in London.
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has unveiled a 27-man squad for the competition, with 12 players receiving debut invitations. The Franco-Malian tactician had earlier stated that the tournament would serve as an opportunity to test emerging talents while preserving his regular senior stars for June’s international friendlies against Poland and Portugal.
“The Unity Cup provides a platform to assess new players. I will comb Europe and invite new players of Nigerian descent, alongside those who were previously called up but never got the chance to feature. Top players from the Nigeria Premier Football League will also be considered,” Chelle had said.
In preparation for the selections, Chelle reportedly travelled across Nigeria to monitor league matches at venues including the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan, Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos and the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu.
Among the notable debutants is Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo, who recently committed his international future to Nigeria after securing FIFA clearance, having previously represented England at the youth level. The 24-year-old is the only Unity Cup debutant also included in the squad for the June friendlies.
Ikorodu City goalkeeper Michael Atata, who recorded 16 clean sheets in the Nigeria Premier Football League this season, also earned his first invitation to the national team.

Despite the FIFA Tier 1 designation, appearances at the Unity Cup will not count as official international caps because the tournament falls outside FIFA’s official international calendar, which begins on June 1. As a result, clubs are not obligated to release players, contributing to the experimental nature of Chelle’s squad.
For the June friendlies, the Super Eagles coach has named a more experienced team featuring stars such as Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Maduka Okoye, Alex Iwobi and Wilfred Ndidi.
Nigeria will face Poland at the PGE Narodowy Stadium in Warsaw on June 3 before taking on Portugal in Leiria on June 10.
