The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has been described as a key institution for national integration and grassroots development in Nigeria, as it marks 53 years of existence.
The Osun State Coordinator of the scheme, Ekeng Ita Kubiangha, made this known on Friday during a rally held in Osogbo to commemorate the anniversary of the NYSC, established on May 22, 1973.
Kubiangha said the scheme has continued to play a vital role in fostering national unity by deploying young graduates to serve in different parts of the country, thereby promoting cultural understanding and manpower distribution.

According to him, the presence of corps members across local government areas has contributed significantly to service delivery and community development nationwide.
“The NYSC has played a critical role in promoting national integration and manpower distribution among states and local government areas,” he said.
“Every local government you go to in Nigeria, you will see a corps member there serving.”
He noted that the movement of graduates across regions has helped bridge ethnic divides and strengthen mutual understanding among Nigerians.
Kubiangha also commended the Osun State Government for its continued support towards the welfare of corps members serving in the state.
He maintained that despite challenges, including insecurity concerns in some parts of the country, the scheme has remained committed to its mandate of nation-building and youth development.
“NYSC has not lost focus. Independent National Electoral Commission, National Orientation Agency, National Population Commission, UNICEF, World Health Organisation and the nation itself cannot do without NYSC,” he said.

He acknowledged existing security challenges but expressed confidence in the resilience of the scheme.
“There are hiccups from fear of insecurity, but God has been faithful to the scheme,” he added.
Also speaking, the Director of NYSC South West Area Office 1, Osogbo, Olubukola Abiodun, said the scheme has remained relevant over the decades due to its contributions to key sectors such as education and healthcare.
Abiodun added that the programme has also helped prepare graduates for the labour market and broader national service since its establishment in 1973.
