United States President, Donald Trump has delayed a planned military strike against Iran following appeals from key Gulf allies, signalling a renewed push for diplomacy amid mounting tensions between Washington and Tehran.
Trump disclosed that leaders from Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates had urged restraint, citing progress in ongoing diplomatic engagements aimed at preventing further escalation in the region.
According to the US leader, behind-the-scenes negotiations are making significant progress, raising hopes for a possible breakthrough over Iran’s nuclear programme and broader regional security concerns.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian defended his government’s involvement in diplomatic discussions, insisting that Tehran’s participation should not be interpreted as a sign of weakness.
“Dialogue does not mean surrender,” Pezeshkian said, stressing that Iran entered negotiations while protecting its national interests and sovereignty.
Despite the renewed diplomatic momentum, tensions remain high. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that its forces intercepted and targeted armed groups allegedly linked to the United States and Israel near the Iraqi border in the western Kurdistan province.
The IRGC also hinted at tightening strategic control over the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes, suggesting new restrictions on undersea communication infrastructure passing through the waterway.
Senior Iranian officials maintained a defiant tone. Mohsen Rezaei, a member of Iran’s Expediency Discernment Council, criticised Washington’s military threats and stated that Iran would not yield to external pressure.
Military commanders in Tehran also warned against what they described as further strategic miscalculations by the United States and its allies, insisting that Iran’s military capability had significantly strengthened.
Diplomatic efforts have reportedly expanded beyond direct US-Iran contacts. Pakistan is said to be playing an important role in indirect communication between both countries, while Qatar has publicly backed mediation efforts to avoid a wider conflict.
In Washington, observers say the prolonged tensions are increasingly becoming a political concern for the Trump administration as Americans face rising economic pressures linked to instability in global energy markets.
Meanwhile, violence continues across the wider Middle East. In Lebanon, casualties from ongoing Israeli military operations have reportedly surpassed 3,000 since March, while fresh confrontations have been reported in Gaza, Iraq and the occupied West Bank.
Although diplomatic channels appear active, uncertainty remains over whether the current efforts will produce lasting stability or merely delay another phase of confrontation in an already volatile region.
