President of Dangote Industries Limited, Aliko Dangote, received a warm reception in Gode, Ethiopia, during a visit linked to his company’s ongoing fertiliser project in the country.

Dangote was hosted by Ethiopian Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed, with both leaders touring the construction site of the proposed fertiliser facility on Sunday.

The project follows a shareholders’ agreement signed in August last year between the Ethiopian government and Dangote Group for the establishment of a urea plant expected to produce three million metric tonnes annually.

Construction of the facility officially commenced in October 2025, with the partnership structured to give Dangote Group a 60 per cent stake while Ethiopian Investment Holdings holds 40 per cent.

During the visit, Dangote announced an increase in the project’s investment value from an initial $2.5 billion to more than $4 billion.

According to Dangote Group, the expansion reflects additional project components, including a 110-kilometre pipeline, a 120-megawatt power plant, a polypropylene packaging facility and a two-million-tonne NPK blending plant.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed described the initiative as a major project with significant implications for Ethiopia’s economic development.

He said the fertiliser plant extends beyond physical infrastructure and represents a strategic investment aimed at advancing agricultural development, improving food security, supporting industrial growth and strengthening economic independence.

The Ethiopian leader noted that the project would help boost local production capacity, reduce reliance on imports, create employment opportunities and support millions of farmers once completed.

Abiy also expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far, stating that construction activities across different sections of the project site were moving according to schedule.

Dangote Group said the investment further demonstrates its commitment to promoting industrial growth and economic development across Africa.o
