Team Nigeria athlete, Adaobi Tabugbo has described world record holder Tobi Amusan as a true friend and one of the biggest positive influences on her athletics career.

Speaking at the ongoing Senior African Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, Tabugbo said following in the footsteps of the reigning world champion continues to motivate her to pursue greater success in the sport.

According to her, Amusan has remained a role model whose presence within the national team has been both inspiring and encouraging.

“Tobi is more of a blessing than she knows to me. I’ve always looked up to her and I’m happy to have her in my space,” she said.

Amusan secured Nigeria’s first gold medal at the championships after winning the women’s 100 metres hurdles final, while Tabugbo claimed bronze to earn her first individual medal for the country. Ashley Miller denied Nigeria a clean sweep of the top two positions in the event.

Reflecting on her achievement, Tabugbo described the bronze medal as a dream come true, adding that her attention has now shifted to preparations for the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

She stressed that early preparation, dedication and teamwork would be crucial to achieving success at the Games.

“Right now it means everything to me. I’m so grateful. God is so good. I’ll be very prepared for the Commonwealth Games because it’s so early in the season and I understand,” she said.

The athlete also commended the atmosphere within Team Nigeria’s camp, describing it as lively, supportive and motivating.

“The spirit within the camp is great. I love being around the team. It is so jovial. I just want to be around them,” she added.
