President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to embrace unity, fairness, and sportsmanship as the party begins its nationwide primary elections ahead of the 2027 general polls.
In a statement marking the commencement of the primaries, the President described the exercise as a defining moment in the history of the APC, noting that it represents the party’s fourth major election cycle since its formation.
Tinubu said the APC was built on the principles of progressive politics, consensus-building, and selfless service, adding that the party must continue to uphold these values to remain strong and united.
According to him, the primaries—beginning with House of Representatives contests and culminating in the presidential primary scheduled for May 25, 2026—go beyond candidate selection, describing them as a test of the party’s unity, resilience, and internal cohesion.
The President commended ongoing efforts by party leaders to adopt consensus arrangements where possible, saying such initiatives help reduce internal rancour and strengthen collective purpose.

He, however, emphasised that where consensus fails, members must conduct themselves with discipline and respect during the contests.
“Election is an essential ingredient of democracy,” Tinubu said, urging aspirants and delegates to avoid rancorous conduct and instead embrace fair competition in the spirit of brotherhood.
He called on winners in the primaries to extend olive branches to their opponents, while urging those who do not succeed to show sportsmanship and remain committed to the party’s progress.
Tinubu also warned against divisive “do-or-die” politics, stressing that political contests should not be a zero-sum game but an avenue for strengthening the party.
The President further urged party leaders and governors to ensure fairness, inclusivity, and a level playing field for all aspirants, noting that transparency in the process would enhance trust and legitimacy.
He placed particular emphasis on the inclusion of women and youths, urging delegates to give them special consideration in the primaries.

Tinubu also called on security agencies, especially the police, to remain professional and neutral throughout the exercise, limiting their role strictly to ensuring peace and order.
He wished all aspirants success in the primaries and expressed confidence in working with emerging candidates to secure victory for the APC in the 2027 general elections.
