Nigerian sprint hurdler Tobi Amusan claimed her third continental title after winning the women’s 100m hurdles final at the 24th African Athletics Championships in Ghana.
The world record holder delivered a dominant performance from start to finish during Wednesday’s final, successfully defending her status as one of Africa’s leading track athletes.
Zimbabwean athlete Ashley Miller finished in second place, while Nigeria’s Adaobi Tabugbo secured third position to earn her first individual medal for the country at the championships.
The victory marks Amusan’s third African Championships title, following earlier triumphs in Nigeria in 2018 and Mauritius in 2022. She did not compete in the hurdles event during the previous edition held in Cameroon in 2024.

Official timings for the race were not immediately released due to organisational challenges affecting the competition, including reported issues with the timing system, incomplete result sheets, and inconsistent officiating decisions.
Despite the technical setbacks, Amusan had already established herself as the leading contender after recording the fastest times in both the heats and semi-finals before sealing victory in the final.
Reacting after the race, the Nigerian star expressed gratitude for the win and described the event as an important start to her season.
Amusan said her focus remains on building momentum for upcoming competitions throughout the athletics calendar.
Elsewhere at the championships, Nigeria narrowly missed additional gold medals in the men’s and women’s 100m finals.
Rosemary Chukwuma finished behind Cameroon’s Kole Etame in the women’s 100m final, while Liberian runner Thelma Davies claimed bronze.
Nigeria’s emerging sprint talent, Miracle Ezechukwu, also featured in the race.
In the men’s category, Chidera Ezeakor won bronze, while Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme secured gold ahead of South Africa’s Nkoana Bradley.

Nigeria’s medal tally at the championships now stands at six medals, comprising one gold, two silver, and three bronze medals as the competition continues through May 17.
Earlier in the tournament, Divine Oladipo and Obiageri Amaechi opened Nigeria’s campaign with silver and bronze medals respectively in the women’s discus event.
