Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have repelled a coordinated attack by suspected ISWAP terrorists on the Headquarters of 27 Brigade and the Buni Gari Checkpoint in Yobe State, killing dozens of insurgents, recovering a cache of arms and ammunition.

The attack occurred in the early hours of Thursday at about 2:00 a.m., according to a statement issued by the Media Information Officer of Operation HADIN KAI, Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba.

The military said the insurgents launched the assault from multiple directions under the cover of darkness in an attempt to overwhelm troops stationed in the area.

According to the statement, troops responded with heavy firepower and maintained control of the location throughout the confrontation.

“The terrorists initially launched their assault from the western flank before pushing additional forces from the southern flank along the Ganinga Junction axis and later from the south-western flank in a desperate attempt to encircle troops,” the statement said.

The military disclosed that no fewer than 50 terrorists were neutralised during the encounter, while several others reportedly fled with gunshot wounds.

It added that troops recovered 10 bodies within the immediate vicinity of the battle area, while intelligence reports indicated that more bodies were found along withdrawal routes around Gashua, Azare and Kamuya.

The Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI also carried out air interdiction missions during the operation, targeting fleeing insurgents and providing surveillance support to ground troops.

The military said the coordinated air and ground operation contributed significantly to the success of the mission.

Recovered items included eight AK-47 rifles, two General Purpose Machine Guns, two Rocket-Propelled Grenade launchers, RPG bombs, ammunition, loaded magazines, bandoliers and improvised explosive device canisters.

Troops and allied volunteer forces are currently conducting follow-up operations in the area to track fleeing insurgents and prevent regrouping.

The military, however, confirmed that two soldiers were killed during the operation, while some personnel sustained injuries and are receiving treatment.

“Operation HADIN KAI honours their heroism and the bravery of all personnel who stood firm in the face of a determined but ultimately futile enemy assault,” the statement added.

It also noted that some military equipment, including Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles and gun trucks, sustained minor damage during the engagement.

The military reiterated its commitment to sustaining operations against insurgents and maintaining security across the North-East region.
