Governor Umo Eno has expressed deep appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the upgrade of Victor Attah Airport to international status, describing the development as a major milestone for Akwa Ibom State.

In a statement of appreciation issued on Tuesday, the governor said the Federal Government’s support was pivotal to the realisation of the long-sought aviation upgrade, which is expected to boost economic growth, tourism, and connectivity in the state.

He also commended the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, for his role in advancing the initiative, noting that his cooperation and commitment significantly contributed to progress recorded in the aviation sector.

Governor Eno further acknowledged the contributions of members of the National Assembly from the state, as well as key stakeholders including the Minister of State for Petroleum (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, the judiciary, political leaders, and industry players.

Special recognition was also given to Ibom Air and the Ibom Airport Development Company for their roles in achieving the milestone, alongside traditional rulers, the clergy, and other critical stakeholders.

The governor lauded residents of the state for their massive turnout during the historic maiden international flight from Victor Attah International Airport to Accra on May 2, and the reception held on May 3, describing the public support as a demonstration of unity and pride.

He noted that the upgrade represents a “golden moment” for the state and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sustaining the momentum through the newly created Ministry of Aviation and Airport Development.

According to him, the government remains focused on positioning Akwa Ibom as a major aviation hub within the Gulf of Guinea, while pursuing broader socio-economic development goals, including the execution of multiple infrastructure projects across the state.
