Media professionals in Akwa Ibom State have been urged to uphold professionalism and ethical standards, as concerns grow over the impact of untrained individuals practising journalism.

The State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, comrade Nsibiet John, issued the warning during activities marking World Press Freedom Day on May 3, 2026, in Uyo.

Speaking at the event held at the Patience (Kemi) Umo Eno Auditorium, John emphasised that poorly trained practitioners pose a serious threat to society, particularly in conflict-sensitive environments. He noted that journalism plays a vital role in promoting peace and stability, and that only qualified professionals can effectively carry out this responsibility.

The event, themed “Shaping a Future at Peace: The Critical Role of Journalism in Promoting Peace and Resolving Conflicts in Akwa Ibom State,” brought together journalists, academics, civil society actors and other stakeholders to examine how the media can contribute to conflict resolution and social cohesion.

John stressed that the credibility of journalism depends largely on the competence of those practising it, warning against the growing trend of engaging unqualified individuals for media-related assignments.

He called on both public and private sector actors to prioritise professionalism when hiring media practitioners, noting that substandard work often results from the involvement of individuals without proper training.

“Journalists are carriers of peace, and society depends on them for accurate and responsible information,” he said, adding that ethical reporting remains central to peaceful coexistence.

Delivering the keynote address, Iniobong Umotong of Akwa Ibom State University highlighted the power of the media in shaping public perception. He urged journalists to remain conscious of their influence, noting that their work can either strengthen or undermine societal harmony.

Earlier, Chairman of the planning committee, Oku Udoetor, reiterated the importance of responsible journalism, encouraging practitioners to remain committed to truth, fairness and national unity.

The event also featured a panel session moderated by Aniekeme Finbarr, with contributions from industry stakeholders including Innocent Okon and others, who examined practical approaches to conflict-sensitive reporting.

In his goodwill message, Engr. Ukeme Eyo commended journalists for their role in societal development and urged them to sustain efforts in promoting discipline and peace.

Awards recognising excellence in governance and development were also presented to several local government chairmen, who in turn pledged continued collaboration with the media to drive community development.

The annual observance of World Press Freedom Day highlights the importance of a free, independent and responsible press, while drawing attention to the challenges faced by journalists globally.
