The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has launched an investigation into a viral video showing a man dressed in police-branded attire allegedly threatening passengers while driving a commercial bus in Lagos.

The incident, said to have occurred near Eko Bridge, was captured in footage circulating online. In the video, the driver—wearing a T-shirt and cap bearing police markings—is seen engaging in a heated exchange with passengers.

One of the passengers is heard confronting the driver over alleged threats, saying he had mentioned killing occupants of the bus and dumping their bodies in a river.

An account shared on X (formerly Twitter) by user Oyindamola claimed the situation escalated after the driver abruptly stopped mid-journey to buy fuel, leaving passengers stranded on the road without explanation.

“We were dropped in the middle of the road because the driver wanted to buy fuel. When passengers questioned the situation, he became aggressive and started issuing threats,” the post stated.

Reacting to the development on Tuesday, the NPF New Media Officer, CSP Aliyu Giwa, confirmed that the Force is reviewing the video.

According to Giwa, preliminary observations suggest that although the individual wore clothing labelled “NPF/Police,” he was not dressed in an official police uniform, and his status as a serving officer has not been established.

“Our attention has been drawn to a video circulating online concerning the alleged actions of an individual in Lagos,” Giwa said.

“Initial observations show the individual is not in a standard police uniform but is wearing items labelled ‘NPF/Police.’ His status as a serving officer remains unconfirmed.

“Such behaviour is unprofessional, and any conduct that threatens or intimidates citizens is unacceptable,” he added.

The police spokesperson called on members of the public with useful information to assist in identifying the individual by reporting to the nearest police station or through official NPF communication channels.

He assured that appropriate action would be taken once the investigations are concluded.
