The All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, of making statements capable of inciting violence, following remarks he reportedly made at an opposition party’s summit in Ibadan on Saturday.
In a press statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, alleged that the governor referenced the historical “Operation Wetie” crisis while addressing concerns about Nigeria’s political direction.
The ruling party described the alleged remarks as “reckless” and a threat to peace and national security, arguing that such rhetoric was inappropriate for a sitting governor.

“It is particularly disturbing for a sitting Governor… to conjure up one of the darkest episodes of political violence in Nigeria’s history,” the statement said, adding that Makinde’s comments could “fuel anarchy and lawlessness.”
The APC called on security and intelligence agencies to take the matter seriously and ensure the protection of lives and property, while stressing that public office holders must be held accountable for statements deemed capable of undermining national stability.
The party also dismissed claims by opposition figures that Nigeria is drifting toward a one-party state, insisting that the country’s democratic space remains open and competitive, with multiple registered political parties.
In a broader critique, the APC attributed challenges within opposition parties to internal crises, leadership struggles, and lack of coherent policy alternatives, arguing that these factors—not external suppression—account for their current state.

As of the time of filing this report, Governor Makinde or his aides had not issued an official response to the allegations.
