The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the arrest and detention of a police officer accused of extorting a motorist in the Idimu area of Lagos State, following the circulation of a viral video that sparked public outrage.
The incident, which gained traction on social media, involved a driver who alleged that he was stopped by the officer despite having complete and valid vehicle documents.
According to the motorist, the officer questioned the colour of the vehicle, insisting it was “grey” rather than “ash” as indicated on the registration papers.
The driver further claimed that the disagreement escalated when the officer allegedly threatened him with arrest and initially demanded ₦30,000 to settle the issue. The amount was reportedly negotiated down to ₦10,000 before the motorist complied under pressure.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, the Lagos State Police Command confirmed that the officer in question has been identified and taken into custody.
The police authorities added that disciplinary procedures have commenced, and assured the public that the outcome of the investigation will be made known upon the conclusion of internal review processes.
The development showcases ongoing concerns about misconduct and accountability within law enforcement, as authorities reiterate their commitment to upholding professionalism and public trust.
