Governor Abba Yusuf has welcomed the return of former governor and senator, Ibrahim Shekarau to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the development as a major political gain for the ruling party in Kano State.
In a statement issued on Sunday by his Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, Governor Yusuf said Shekarau’s defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) signals growing momentum for the APC in the state.
“The party in Kano continues to witness growing support and consolidation, positioning itself as the most dominant political force in the state,” the statement read.
Yusuf noted that Shekarau’s return having been a founding member of the APC would reinforce the party’s structure and deepen its political influence ahead of future electoral contests, particularly the 2027 general elections.
He added that plans were underway to organize a formal reception for the former governor, with a date to be announced in consultation with the party’s national secretariat.
Expressing optimism about the party’s prospects, the governor said the APC in Kano is united and strategically positioned to secure victories across all elective positions.
Earlier on Sunday, Shekarau formally resigned his membership of the PDP in a letter that took immediate effect, paving the way for his return to the APC.
