Nigeria on Wednesday bid a solemn farewell to some of its bravest servicemen, as Late Brigadier General Omo Braimah, Captain Ismail, and other fallen soldiers were laid to rest with full military honours at the Maimalari Cantonment Cemetery in Maiduguri, Borno State.
The ceremony, marked by deep emotion, national reflection – drew top government officials, senior military officers, grieving families, and fellow servicemen who gathered to honour the ultimate sacrifice made by the deceased in the line of duty.
Among dignitaries present were Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum; the Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa alongside the Chief of Defence Staff and the Chief of Army Staff.
Their presence underscored the gravity of the moment and the nation’s collective respect for its fallen defenders.
In a ceremony steeped in military tradition, the deceased were accorded full honours, including ceremonial gun salutes and the presentation of national flags to their next of kin. The atmosphere was heavy with grief as families mourned their loved ones, while uniformed personnel stood in silent tribute to their departed comrades.
Delivering tributes, Governor Zulum and other senior officials described the fallen officers and soldiers as patriots who demonstrated exceptional courage and unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s unity and security. They emphasized that the sacrifices of the deceased would not be forgotten and would continue to inspire future generations of servicemen.
“Their bravery in the face of danger and their dedication to duty represent the highest ideals of military service,” the Governor noted during the ceremony.
Prayers were offered for the repose of their souls, while detailed citations recounting their service records and acts of bravery were read aloud, bringing both pride and sorrow to the bereaved families.
The ceremony served as a stark reminder of the human cost of Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges. Yet, amid the grief, there was a shared sense of honour in the lives lived and the sacrifices made.
As the nation mourns, it also reflects on the enduring price of peace and stability paid by those who chose service above self and gave their lives in defence of their country.
